Sao Bento  •  ★ 4

Incognito is a nightclub at Rua Poiais de Sao Bento 37 in Lisbon's Sao Bento district, close to Calcada do Combro. Founded in 1988, it has run for decades as one of the city's longest-standing venues for alternative music, with programming built around indie rock, synth-pop, new wave and post-punk. The interior keeps a small, close club layout rather than a large dance floor, and the venue has hosted both DJ nights and live performances by Portuguese and touring acts. It has historically operated Wednesday to Saturday nights. Because listings for recent seasons are patchy, checking the club's own social media for the current programme and opening nights before travelling is worthwhile. It sits within walking distance of Sao Bento station and is served by tram and bus routes running through the Bica and Chiado area, in a part of the city where several other late-opening bars are clustered.
