Why it matters: since 2006, the young people of the local La Paranza social cooperative have run these ancient catacombs, turning tourism revenue into 56 jobs and a full-scale revival of the once-forgotten Rione Sanità neighborhood. It’s a rare case of heritage tourism directly rebuilding a community: ticket sales fund training, an orchestra, a theater group and a recording studio for local youth. Book the guided tour (available in English), and pair it with a walk through Rione Sanità itself – the cooperative’s ripple effect is visible on every corner. Closed Wednesdays.
