Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

Ferry Plaza at the San Francisco Ferry Building, home of the farmers market

Embarcadero

Why it matters: Running since 1993 and operated by the nonprofit Foodwise, this market exists to link city shoppers directly with California’s sustainable growers and food makers while funding food-education programs. The Saturday market is the big one, with 100-plus vendors selling produce, cheese, bread, flowers and prepared food along the waterfront. Come Saturday morning and eat your way through, but the quieter Tuesday and Thursday markets are easier for actual grocery shopping.
