Ice Cave of Island Korkia-Maura

Ice Cave of Island Korkia-Maura, the ice sheet at the base of the cave has been unmelted for hundreds of years. The ice sheet is 15 meters long, 1 to 3.5 meters wide and 1.5 to 4 meters high. In recent years, however, the ice of the Island Korkia-Maura cave has melted more and more during the summer, as local tourists bring warmth to the cave.

The fishermen of Lake Inarijärvi have used this ice cave as a fish cellar. In the 17th century, the cave is said to have been used by Päiviö Vuolab, the famous destroyer of Seita places. Today, the Ice Cave of Island Korkia-Maura is a popular attraction. Korkia-Maura Island is located in the southern part of Lake Inari.

Local tip: The island has a marina, a campfire site and a dry toilet. In summer, you can only get there by boat, in winter skiing or snowmobiling.
