In the round Okraglak building at the centre of Plac Nowy, stalls sell Krakow’s signature street food: a long baguette split and topped with mushrooms, cheese and whatever you fancy. Cheap, filling and open late – a perfect stop on a Kazimierz bar hop. Endzior is the local favourite.
One of the oldest bars in Kazimierz – candle-lit, with alchemist tools on the walls and a warren of little rooms and a cellar where almost anyone can find their nook. Popular with tourists but still loved by locals; head down to the cellar on weekends for live gigs from local and touring bands.
Vienna’s biggest flea market sits right beside the Naschmarkt. Every Saturday it fills with nostalgic finds, old books and vintage clothes – plenty of junk mixed in with the treasure. Come early for the best bargains; it is between the Kettenbruckengasse and Pilgramgasse U-Bahn stops.
Also known as Pudukade, this busy Pettah street is Colombo’s after-dark food destination. Stalls and small restaurants stay open past midnight, serving rice and curry, short-eats, BBQ, burgers and local drinks like faluda at easy prices.
A spiral staircase and underground crossing on the edge of Fort Canning Park, linking Dhoby Ghaut to the greenery above. Look up from the bottom of the stairs and you are framed by a canopy of lush trees – one of Singapore’s favourite photo spots.
A sprawling weekly street market where villagers from around Alanya bring fresh, low-priced fruit and vegetables, alongside clothes, shoes and household bits. Spread across several crossing streets, it is a great place to experience a real Turkish marketplace.
On weekends locals drift into Rione Monti and stop by this open-air market, where young Italian designers and vintage sellers show off their own fashion, accessories, illustrations and artwork. It is the place to hunt for one-of-a-kind pieces straight from the makers.
A perennially buzzing alternative bar with a studenty vibe on the round Plac Zbawiciela (Saviour Square) – its cheeky ‘beer & vodka’ answer to neighbour Charlotte’s ‘bread & wine’. Regular concerts and DJ nights, lively even on Mondays, with prime outdoor seating over the square in summer. Tip: it’s small, so come early on gig nights.
One of Warsaw’s most beautiful streets – a WWII survivor of grand, richly decorated tenements now restored and home to upscale boutiques, restaurants and spas. Come for a stroll, some window-shopping or a piece by a Polish fashion designer (and maybe a celebrity sighting).
