L’Aventure du Sucre

L’Aventure du Sucre

L’Aventure du Sucre is a sugar museum in the former Beau Plan factory at Pamplemousses, in northern Mauritius about 15 kilometres from Port Louis. The mill produced sugar for roughly 200 years before closing in 1999; the museum opened in 2002 within the restored buildings and retains much of the plant, including cane crushing mills, evaporators, a nineteenth-century steam engine and a 1922 locomotive. Ten themed sections cover settlement and cane cultivation, slavery and its abolition, indentured labour, sugar manufacture, rum distillation and present-day uses of the crop. The ticket also covers tastings at the Village Boutik, which sells more than thirty cane products. Le Fangourin restaurant is on site and the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is adjacent.
