The Bazar Sábado — the 'Saturday Bazaar' — is one of Mexico City's most delightful weekend traditions, a beloved art-and-craft market held every Saturday in the cobbled, bougainvillea-draped colonial suburb of San Ángel. For decades it has gathered some of the country's finest artisans and artists under one roof and across the surrounding plazas, a joyful, high-quality alternative to the usual souvenir stalls.
Inside a handsome old mansion on Plaza San Jacinto you will find beautifully made crafts, jewellery, ceramics, textiles and design, while the leafy squares outside fill with painters selling their work and food stalls dishing up antojitos. Add the cobbled streets, colonial architecture and buzzing, arty atmosphere and it is an easy half-day out.
Local tip: It runs on Saturdays only, so plan around that — go from late morning, and combine it with a wander around pretty San Ángel and lunch nearby. Bring cash and be ready to pay a fair price for genuine, quality craft.
