Big in Japan is unlike any other establishment on The Main’s nightlife scene. Confused passer-bys are often spotted staring with curiosity as its nondescript entrance is nothing more than a crimson-coloured door adorned with Japanese letters. Once past the heavy curtains that surround the space, you will find yourself transported to another era.
Not to be mistaken for the restaurant that goes by the same name, Big in Japan is a dark, mysterious bar reminiscent of a speakeasy. Dimly lit with candles, they specialize in whisky (the bottles that hang from the ceiling are for sale) and also serve Japanese pub fare. Their large punch bowl is the best way to bond with a good group of friends.
Keep up with the local lingo – Montrealers refer to this place as the “red door.”
