Mumbai's defining monument, the Gateway of India arches proudly over the harbour at Apollo Bunder. It's the city's natural meeting point, alive with vendors, families and photographers from dawn till late.
The basalt arch is free to admire; boats to Elephanta Island and the harbour depart from the jetty alongside.
Local tip: Visit early morning or after sunset to dodge the fiercest heat and crowds.
