The Müller'sches Volksbad is one of Munich's most breathtaking buildings — a sumptuous Art Nouveau public bathhouse opened in 1901 on the banks of the Isar, and still a working swimming pool today. All soaring vaulted ceilings, stucco, columns and period detail, it was the largest and most expensive swimming bath in the world when it was built, and remains a genuine jewel.
You can actually swim beneath the ornate domes: the grand main pool, a smaller second pool, and a beautiful old Roman-Irish steam bath and sauna area let you experience the splendour first-hand rather than just admire it. It is a magical, only-in-Munich way to combine a bit of culture with a proper swim or spa session.
Local tip: Bring swimming kit and a towel to make the most of it — swimming among the Art Nouveau splendour is the whole point. Check public-swim times, and consider the historic sauna and steam bath for the full experience.
