Planetanya

★ 4.2

Planetanya combines a digital planetarium with a science garden, ecological ponds and a Japanese garden spread across several acres on the edge of the city. The Japanese theme isn’t decorative – the centre is built around the story of Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese diplomat who issued transit visas that saved thousands of Lithuanian Jews in 1940, and the garden includes an origami-inspired display in his memory.

Planetarium shows, telescope evenings and science exhibits run on a changing schedule through the year, aimed as much at families as at school groups.

Local tip: tickets and showtimes are booked through the centre’s own website, so check before you turn up, especially for planetarium screenings.
