The Selimiye Mosque, originally the Gothic Cathedral of St Sophia built by French Lusignan kings in the 13th century, is the most important monument of northern Nicosia, its Gothic architecture crowned with two Ottoman minarets. A striking symbol of the citys layered history, it can be reached by crossing the Green Line. Visiting the vast, whitewashed interior of this cathedral-turned-mosque is a highlight of the old town and a powerful illustration of Cyprus mixed heritage.
