Known affectionately as The Laff, Château Lafayette is the oldest tavern in Ottawa, pouring drinks in the ByWard Market since 1849. A gloriously unpretentious spot with a worn wooden bar, cheap beer and plenty of character, it draws a democratic mix of regulars, students, politicians and curious visitors. Live music and a total lack of pretension keep it firmly a local favourite, and a pint here is one of the most authentic nights out to be had in the capital.
