Fort Jacques (Permanently Closed)

Permanently closed. Abandoned; the Fermathe and Kenscoff heights are not accessible. We keep this page because people still look for it, and because what happened here is part of the city’s story.

Built on Dessalines' orders after independence to defend the young republic from the sea, and for generations the cool pine-scented Sunday walk above the capital.

Reported abandoned from 2024, and the Fermathe-Kenscoff heights around it have seen repeated armed attacks and displacement since January 2025.

Good to know: Do not attempt the drive. Ask locally before believing any report that the mountain road has reopened.
