Hunger Wall Is A Medieval Gem Of Prague

Hladová zeď | Hunger Wall

Why locals love it

This medieval defensive wall has been standing here for ages, to be more precise, since 14th century. It is a part of Petřín hill/park and since we enjoy roaming around this green spot we also love to discover hidden corners, holes and other photogenic spots of this long wall.

Why you should visit it

It is a nice piece of our history. The whole wall was built by order of Charles IV., our famous king and Holy Roman Emperor. Its purpose was to strengthen the fortifications of Prague Castle and Lesser Town against attacks. And why we call it "Hunger Wall"? Charles IV. employed poor people who built this wall so they could earn money for food.

Special tip

Some people say that former name of the wall was "Toothed Wall" - and I wouldn´t be surprised. It really has a shape of teeth :-)
