The paternoster lift accessible to the public in Prague is in the New Town Hall, Nova radnice, at Marianske namesti 2, close to Staromestska station on Metro line A. Installed in 1911, it was the first of its kind in the Czech lands; the original mechanism was replaced in the 1970s and the installation was renovated in 2017 and again in 2023. A paternoster is a continuous loop of open, doorless cabins moving slowly and without stopping, so riders step on and off while the cabins are in motion. The cabins do not invert as they pass over the top of the loop. Public riding was suspended after visitors were seen jumping between moving cabins, and was restored for building staff in May 2024. Since 1 June 2024 the only way for visitors to ride it has been a guided tour operated by Prague City Tourism, for which participants must be eighteen or over. Tours run on weekdays and at weekends, with one English-language weekday departure, priced at 250 koruna for adults and 170 koruna for students and seniors.
