The geckos that opened a street!

San Agustin Square

Why locals love it

During Colonial times this area was the vegetable patch of the Augustinians until 1878 when the religious denied to sell this space to the city council in order to extend the Mejia St. The major said that there are geckos there, but the priests resisted until a gecko appeared on the bed of one of them. They finally sold and the street was extended.

Why you should visit it

In 1964 the government built the Civil Registration. This was a modern construction that damaged the physiognomy of the area. On November, 2015, the National Government decided to demolish the building with the aim to build a very nice square that now shows the majestic walls of the monastery. There are two cafeterias. All was opened in 2016.

Special tip

Don't miss reading the interesting information located in the plaques next to the statue of Saint Agustine and take a pic with the geckos.
