Hallgrimskirkja Church and Tower

Hallgrimskirkja church tower rising over central Reykjavik

Skolavorduholt  •  ★ 4.7  •  $

Rising like a basalt rocket over the city, Hallgrimskirkja is Reykjaviks most photographed landmark and, at around seventy-four metres, one of Icelands tallest buildings. The architect Gudjon Samuelsson modelled its soaring facade on the columnar lava flows found across the country. Step inside for the serene, light-filled nave and its vast pipe organ, then ride the lift up the tower for the finest view in town, out over the colourful rooftops to the sea and mountains. Try to time your visit with one of the regular organ recitals.
