Rising like a basalt rocket over the city, Hallgrimskirkja is Reykjaviks most photographed landmark and, at around seventy-four metres, one of Icelands tallest buildings. The architect Gudjon Samuelsson modelled its soaring facade on the columnar lava flows found across the country. Step inside for the serene, light-filled nave and its vast pipe organ, then ride the lift up the tower for the finest view in town, out over the colourful rooftops to the sea and mountains.
