The synagogue was built in 1904 and it is a wonderful piece of Art Nouveau architecture. It is the only synagogue that was spared from the destruction in the times of the Nazi occupation. Because of the high density of buildings in the area, burning it down was too risky.
The synagogue has been neatly renovated and stands out as a beautiful sacral monument. The man who sells the entrance tickets will tell you all about the building as well as the history of the local Jewish community in Latvia.
After visiting the synagogue, take a walk through the surroundings. It's a beautiful corner of the Old Town.
