Christ the Redeemer, the colossal statue of Jesus atop Corcovado mountain, is the symbol of Rio de Janeiro and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. A ticketed cog train or shuttle carries visitors up through the Tijuca forest to the summit, where the outstretched arms of the Art Deco figure preside over jaw-dropping panoramas of the city, bay, beaches and Sugarloaf far below. Awe-inspiring by day or as the light fades, it is the essential and unmissable landmark of the marvellous city.
