Ai Tre Scalini

Ai Tre Scalini is a wine bar at Via Panisperna 251 in the Monti district of Rome, trading under the sign Bottiglieria dal 1895. The earliest documents referring to the premises date from 1895 and the exterior sign is thought to be from the early twentieth century; the interior keeps painted wooden panels attributed to artists who also worked on churches in the surrounding streets. The present owners took it on around 2004 and have left the historic fittings largely as they found them. The wine list runs to roughly a hundred Italian labels, changing with the season and served by the glass as well as the bottle, alongside beer and spirits. A blackboard carries the day's dishes, which are Roman and served to accompany the wine rather than as a full restaurant menu. The room is small and does not take bookings, so a wait is common in the evening. It opens Monday to Friday from early afternoon until the early hours and at weekends from the early evening. Cavour station on Metro line B is a few minutes away.
