Mercado Central is a soaring 19th-century cast-iron market hall near the Mapocho river, built for the produce trade and now equally famous for the seafood restaurants packed under its roof. Fishmongers still work the stalls at the edges, selling the catch that ends up on the grills minutes later.
Walk the stalls first to see the range of Chilean seafood on offer, then pick a counter for a fresh ceviche or a whole grilled fish rather than the first table someone waves you to.
Local tip: Prices at the tourist-facing tables inside can run high; check a menu before sitting down.
