Hotel Europe opened on 12 December 1882, funded by the Serbian merchant Gligorije Jeftanovic and designed by Karel Parik, the Czech architect responsible for much of Sarajevo's Austro-Hungarian townscape. It stands on Vladislava Skarica in Stari Grad, overlooking the Gazi Husrev-beg Bezistan and the excavated ruins of the Taslihan caravanserai, a few minutes on foot from Bascarsija, the Latin Bridge and the Ferhadija promenade. The building was re-privatised in 2006 and restored under the architect Sead Golos, reopening on 12 December 2008, its 126th anniversary. It now holds 160 rooms and 14 suites, along with a spa containing an indoor pool, Turkish bath and saunas, and five conference halls. Two long-standing rooms are open to non-residents: the Becka Kafana, a Viennese-style coffee house with secessionist decoration, and the Slasticarna Mozart patisserie.
