Though it's now spanned its own chain of "modern" Jesse restaurants, the original Jesse on Tianping Lu is still the best for tucking into Shanghainese home cooking. Staples like braised pork shoulder, "opium fish head" and xin tai ran (dates stuffed with sticky rice) continue to shine, and the waitresses continue to be nostalgically surly.
