Tregu Rus

Tregu Rus, the Russian Market, is Shkoder's second-largest market and works mainly as a farmers' and produce market. Trading starts early, from around 07:00, as growers from the surrounding countryside bring in seasonal fruit and vegetables and sell directly from stalls and from the backs of vehicles, alongside fish, meat, cloth, tools and second-hand goods. Trade thins out by early afternoon once the morning's stock has gone, so a visit is best made in the first few hours. Produce is sold in small quantities as readily as large, prices are low, and the transaction is with the person who grew the food rather than through a wholesaler. The site was fully reconstructed in a project completed in December 2024, jointly funded by the Municipality of Shkoder and the Agency for Rural and Agricultural Development, which replaced informal stalls with roughly 115 built units after decades of poor sanitary conditions. The market gives a plain view of everyday commerce in the city, away from the restored streets of the historic centre.
