Monserrate Palace was built in the 1850s for wealthy English merchant Sir Francis Cook, blending Moorish, Gothic and Indian architectural influences into one of the more eclectic palaces in a town full of them.
Its real draw for many visitors is the botanical park surrounding it, one of the most significant in Portugal, planted with species collected from across the former British empire and laid out across sweeping lawns and valleys.
It sits further from the historic centre than Pena Palace or Quinta da Regaleira, which keeps its crowds noticeably lighter even in peak season.
Local tip: Because it’s quieter than the more central palaces, it’s a good choice if you want unhurried time in the gardens rather than a rushed circuit.
