Lampivaara is Europe's only amethyst mine open to visitors, set high on a fell inside Pyhä-Luosto National Park and within Sodankylä municipality itself.
A guided visit to the fell-top mine where you dig and keep one amethyst; roughly six hours including transport. Runs year-round, reached by snow train in winter.
Local tip: This departure is from Rovaniemi, 130 km south; self-drivers reach Luosto in about 45 km from Sodankylä.
