Sam Doidoh — Bulgarian for 'I came alone' — is a cosy, old-fashioned little tavern, a krachma tucked away on a central Sofia street and a much-loved local hideaway. The interior is all authentic, lived-in charm, and on many evenings there is live jazz filling the small room, giving it the warm, slightly bohemian feel of a proper neighbourhood haunt.
It is cheap and cheerful in the best way: hearty, homely Bulgarian plates — think meatballs and chips — alongside inexpensive beer and rakia, the kind of honest fare that fills you up for a handful of leva. The crowd is friendly and local, and the mood is made for settling in for the evening.
Local tip: Go in the evening, ideally when there is live music on, and do not expect frills — the appeal is the atmosphere and the prices. Bring cash, and note it is small, so it fills up nicely once the jazz starts.
