Carved into the sandstone at the tip of the Botanic Garden peninsula, Mrs Macquaries Chair is where photographers gather for the postcard shot with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge lined up together. The bench was cut for the governor wife in the early colonial days so she could watch for ships from home. It is a short, flat walk from the city and completely free. Arrive before sunrise if you want the frame to yourself, as tour groups fill the spot through the middle of the day.
