Blue Mosque

★ 4.5

Tabriz's Blue Mosque dates to the fifteenth century under the Kara Koyunlu dynasty, and even in its partially ruined state, the surviving tilework hints at how striking the original must have been.

Large sections of the complex, including parts of the mausoleum, were damaged over the centuries, and the preserved and restored areas are now managed as a ticketed heritage site rather than a fully working mosque.

Local tip: Look closely at the tile fragments near the entrance; the blue-and-gold patterns that gave the mosque its name are best preserved there.
