Alba Carolina is the largest Vauban-style star fortress in Romania, with seven bastions and the cathedral where Romania's kings were crowned.
A two-and-a-half-hour guided visit through the citadel gates, bastions and inner squares with a local guide. Pleasant year round.
Local tip: Alba Iulia is about 185 km from Târgu Mureș, some two and a half hours by car. The walk is flat but open to the sun.
