Shamdan — its name means 'candelabra', and it was once known as the Chandelier — is one of Tehran's more storied dining rooms, opened around six decades ago with distinctly French design and atmosphere. Today it pairs that elegant old-world setting with Iranian cooking at its best, often with a pianist playing softly in the background. Intimate and ornately decorated, it has long been a favourite for special occasions and refined evenings out.
Expect a polished, formal atmosphere suited to celebrations and business dinners, with attentive service in a small, richly appointed room. The kitchen spans Iranian kebabs, steaks and seafood — the seafood is especially well regarded. You will find it on Esfandiar Street in northern Tehran.
Local tip: It is best suited to a dressed-up evening, so book ahead for weekends when the dining room fills quickly.
