The Metropolitan Cathedral of Timisoara, an immense Romanian Orthodox church completed in 1946, dominates one end of Piata Victoriei with its soaring, colourful spires blending Byzantine and Moldavian styles. One of the tallest churches in the country, its richly decorated interior and its role as a place of refuge during the 1989 revolution make it deeply significant.
