Bab el Bhar, also known as Porte de France, is the old gate marking where the Medina ends and the French-built Ville Nouvelle begins, and walking through it is the closest thing Tunis has to a hard line between its two very different centuries.
The square around it is one of the Medina's natural meeting points, with cafes, shops selling traditional dress and a steady flow of people cutting between the old town and Avenue Habib Bourguiba.
Local tip: It's a useful landmark for getting your bearings if you're navigating the Medina's narrow streets without much of a plan.
