The last of Washington's nineteenth-century public markets still operating in its original role, designed by Adolf Cluss and opened in 1873. The South Hall houses permanent traders selling meat, fish, cheese, bread and produce, several of them long-established family businesses; a fire in 2007 destroyed much of the building, which was rebuilt and reopened in 2009. At weekends the market spills outdoors, with a farmers' line along 7th Street and a flea market of antiques, prints, textiles and crafts on the adjoining plaza and school yard. The surrounding streets of Victorian terraces are among the best-preserved in the city. The market is closed on Mondays. Eastern Market Metro on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines adjoins the site.
