A UNESCO World Heritage site tumbling down a green hillside above the Dnipro, the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is the spiritual heart of the country, a thousand-year-old complex of gilded churches, museums and the famous cave labyrinths where mummified monks lie. A ticket to the grounds and museums is inexpensive; the caves are free but modest dress is required. Buy a thin candle at the entrance to light your way underground, and cover shoulders and knees.
