The Niederburg is the oldest and most picturesque quarter of Konstanz, a maze of narrow medieval lanes lined with half-timbered and painted houses, small squares and hidden courtyards below the Munster. Wandering its atmospheric streets, dotted with cafes, wine taverns and boutiques, is one of the great pleasures of the city. Largely spared the destruction of the war thanks to its position on the Swiss border, the old town preserves a wonderfully intact historic character.
