A full-scale facsimile of the Cosquer cave, a decorated Palaeolithic site beneath Cap Morgiou whose only entrance now lies some 37 metres below sea level and which cannot be visited directly. The replica occupies the lower levels of the Villa Mediterranee on the J4 esplanade, beside the MuCEM and Fort Saint-Jean. Visitors move through the reconstructed chambers in small six-seat modules on a fixed circuit, with audio commentary in several languages, passing engravings and paintings of horses, bison, ibex, seals, penguins and the great auk. An upper gallery presents life-size models of Ice Age fauna and explains the post-glacial sea-level rise that flooded the cave. Entry is timed and advance booking is advisable.
