Slovenia’s principal collection of art from the High Middle Ages to the early twentieth century, housed in the former Narodni dom, a neo-Renaissance building of 1896 joined to a modern wing by a glazed entrance atrium. Displays run from Gothic panel painting and sculpture through Baroque work by Valentin Metzinger and Fortunat Bergant to the Slovene Impressionists, Rihard Jakopic, Ivan Grohar, Matija Jama and Matej Sternen, the best-known part of the holdings. The original of Francesco Robba’s Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers stands in the atrium, moved indoors from Town Square for conservation and replaced there by a copy. Admission is charged. The building faces Tivoli Park and the Opera House.
