The Historical Museum of Shkodra opened in 1947 as the People’s Museum and took its present form from 1949. Since 1996 it has occupied the Oso Kuka House, a nineteenth-century residence built in the traditional Shkodra style and valued in its own right as an example of the town’s older domestic architecture. The collection is arranged in sections covering archaeology, ethnography and fine art, with a library attached, and ranges over antiquities and coinage, early Christian and Byzantine material, Ottoman-period objects, weapons, craft tools, household items and regional dress; several rooms are laid out as traditional interiors. Admission is charged, with a reduced rate for children.
