Hawaii Foodbank

The state's principal food-distribution charity, supplying a network of several hundred agencies and programmes across Oahu and coordinating with the neighbour-island foodbanks. Grocery costs in Hawaii are among the highest in the United States, which makes this a rather more central institution than its industrial-estate address suggests. The warehouse in Mapunapuna, near the airport, runs regular volunteer sessions in which members of the public sort and repack donated food; shifts are booked in advance through the organisation's website, and visitors as well as residents are accepted. Cash donations go considerably further than tinned goods, given the foodbank's bulk purchasing power. It sits roughly twenty minutes' drive from Waikiki in a district of warehouses and light industry, and is awkward to reach without a car.
