In April 1970 residents of Barrio Logan discovered that land promised as a park was being cleared for a highway patrol station, and occupied the site, forming chains around the bulldozers while others planted trees and cactus. The occupation lasted twelve days and produced this 7.9-acre park beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge. Mural painting began in 1973 on the bridge pylons and abutments and now forms the largest collection of outdoor murals in the United States, covering the Mexican Revolution, indigenous history, farm labour organising and local figures. The park was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Access is free and unrestricted. Chicano Park Day each April brings lowriders, ballet folklorico and workshops, and the Chicano Park Museum opened nearby in 2022.
