A four-hour whale-watching trip aboard America, a 139-foot schooner built as a replica of the 1851 yacht of that name, sailing from Shelter Island on San Diego Bay. The vessel's low, open decks and broad beam make it steadier than smaller whale-watching boats and give sightlines close to the water. Grey whales pass on migration between December and April, while blue and fin whales are more usual in summer; common and bottlenose dolphins are seen year round. Crew with marine biology backgrounds provide commentary. Snacks and soft drinks are supplied and parking at the dock is free. The meeting point is the grassy area between the car park and the bay. A free return trip is offered if no cetaceans are sighted.
