Vedanthangal is a 30-hectare Ramsar-listed wetland and one of the oldest bird sanctuaries in India, with records of protection going back to the 18th century. Around 115 species have been recorded here, and from November to March tens of thousands of painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, herons and migratory ducks nest and roost around the shallow lake.
Local tip: It is a genuine day trip rather than a city stop, roughly two hours each way, so plan for the whole morning and bring binoculars. A small entrance and camera fee applies at the gate.
