DakshinaChitra is a living-history museum on the East Coast Road built around relocated and reconstructed traditional houses from across South India, complete with resident craftspeople demonstrating weaving, pottery and other trades. It functions as an open-air showcase of South Indian vernacular architecture rather than a conventional indoor museum.
Local tip: It sits outside central Chennai on the way to Mahabalipuram, so it pairs well with that day trip.
