Malecón de Santo Domingo

★ 4.6

The Malecón runs roughly 15 kilometres along the Caribbean coastline on Avenida George Washington, well outside the old city walls, and works as the place locals actually go to walk, jog or just sit by the water in the evening. Two obelisk monuments mark stretches of the promenade, and informal vendors sell Haitian naïf-style paintings along it.

It is also where the city's bigger outdoor festivals and concerts tend to land, so check what's on if you want more than a walk.

Local tip: Evenings are far busier and more atmospheric than daytime – this is when locals actually use it.
