Plaza de España opens out in front of the Ozama River with a statue of Nicolás de Ovando at its centre, flanked by the Alcázar de Colón on one side and Museo de las Casas Reales on the other. Restaurants and terraces ring the square today, which makes it as much a place to eat outdoors as one to sightsee.
It's worth timing a visit for early evening, when the terraces fill and the light on the Alcázar's façade is at its best.
Local tip: Combine it with a walk up Calle Las Damas – the two connect directly.
