Puerta del Conde is what's left of the city's old defensive wall, renamed for the Count of Peñalva after the 1655 defence against an English invasion, and it's where the Dominican flag was raised for the first time on 27 February 1844. The Altar de la Patria inside the adjoining Parque Independencia holds the marble mausoleum of founding fathers Duarte, Sánchez and Mella.
It sits at the western end of Calle El Conde, so it is a natural bookend to a walk down the pedestrian street.
Local tip: Walk it at the end of a Calle El Conde stroll – the gate marks a natural finishing point before heading back into the old city.
