Tucked inside the Grand Bazaar, the Kafashan Market is the historic centre of Tabriz's leather and shoemaking trade, a trade that ranks second only to carpet weaving in the city's craft economy.
Small workshops and shopfronts here still cut, stitch and sell handmade leather shoes, a craft passed down through named timchehs such as Timcheh Omid and Timcheh Haj Abulqasem. Tabrizi handmade shoes have a national reputation, and this is where to see and buy them straight from the makers.
Local tip: Ask to see the workshop behind the counter if a shop looks quiet; many keep the actual shoemaking out of sight of the main passage.
