Samin Porotila is a working reindeer farm in Venejärvi run by local herder Sami Tiensuu, one of a handful of families in the Kolari area whose main livelihood is still reindeer herding rather than tourism built on top of it.
Visits centre on the animals themselves – feeding and leading reindeer, trying traditional Lapp throwing-stick games, and a small gallery of reindeer-themed art alongside a museum cottage furnished as it would have been over 200 years ago.
Local tip: Book ahead directly rather than turning up – this is a working family farm, not a drop-in attraction, and visits are arranged around the herd's needs.
